As a liver transplant anaesthesiologist trained in India and the UK, his career was built around precision, trust, and care at the most critical edge of medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But something shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI realised that my insights from the clinical frontlines could meaningfully contribute to how systems run,\u201d he says. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t about leaving medicine &#8211; it was about expanding my role in it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That realisation sparked a transformation. After returning from the UK, he helped build several liver transplant programmes across India and abroad. Gradually, Dr. Ilan moved from the operating room to the boardroom. Today, as CEO of Apollo Hospitals &#8211; Chennai Region, he leads not just to deliver care &#8211; but to reimagine how it is delivered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transition wasn\u2019t easy, but it was purposeful. \u201cAs a doctor, you touch 20 patients a day. As a leader, your decisions touch thousands,\u201d he reflects. \u201cI still carry that clinical lens &#8211; the nurse\u2019s fatigue, the patient\u2019s anxiety, the young doctor\u2019s doubt &#8211; into every strategy meeting. That\u2019s where empathy becomes policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His leadership philosophy is rooted in listening, systems thinking, and an unwavering focus on patient outcomes. He\u2019s particularly excited about the integration of AI into hospital management &#8211; not as a buzzword, but as a real tool for efficiency, access, and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His time at ISB played a catalytic role. \u201cI came to ISB to understand the language of business. I left with a new way of thinking. It gave me the confidence to lead outside the comfort of clinical identity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To fellow doctors at a crossroads, he offers this clarity: \u201cYou\u2019re not stepping away from medicine &#8211; you\u2019re scaling it. If you care about changing healthcare, don\u2019t stay on the sidelines.
