“Home healthcare is a gamechanger in the healthcare sector. In the coming decade, we will be discussing how the home healthcare industry has grown in India,\u201d says Dr. Mahesh Joshi, CEO, Apollo\u00a0Home Healthcare\u00a0and alumnus of the PGPMAX Class of 2011 at ISB.<\/p>\n
Mahesh hails from a\u00a0business family from a\u00a0small town in\u00a0Maharashtra.\u00a0His becoming a doctor was\u00a0an outcome of his father\u2019s aspirations. \u201cThere was hardly any graduate\u00a0for almost three generations in my family. But my father\u2019s\u00a0resolve was\u00a0so strong that all five of his children, including me, became doctors,\u201d he shares.\u00a0The seeds were sown very early on when\u00a0he\u00a0used to see\u00a0their\u00a0family physician being\u00a0treated\u00a0with the utmost respect.\u00a0\u201cPeople\u00a0opening the door of his car,\u00a0carrying his medical kit…\u00a0I had never seen that kind of respect being\u00a0given\u00a0to\u00a0anyone\u00a0else. Those memories have stayed with me.\u201d<\/p>\n
After completing\u00a0MBBS, Mahesh\u00a0was conferred the Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine for his contribution to the growth of international emergency medicine.\u00a0He\u00a0led Apollo\u2019s emergency medicine services for 14 years before taking the reins of Apollo Home Healthcare in 2014, right after graduating from the PGPMAX at ISB.\u00a0About moving from clinical practice to management, he says, \u201cWhile leading the emergency medicine, I went from being a core clinician to becoming an administrator. My duties expanded beyond the department and clinical responsibilities. In meetings with business leaders, we discussed investment, return on equity, scaling up, and more. As a pure clinician, I did not know about such things. That\u2019s when I started looking to pick up\u00a0business and\u00a0managerial skills and play a larger role beyond just a functional one.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mahesh was the only\u00a0medical doctor in\u00a0a\u00a0batch of 65 people\u00a0in PGPMAX.\u00a0Reminiscing\u00a0his\u00a0days at ISB, he\u00a0says, \u201cISB was a very humbling experience for me. Traditionally, people put doctors on a very high pedestal. But, when I interacted with CEOs\/CFOs and my peers at ISB,\u00a0I\u00a0realised\u00a0I had\u00a0limited management\u00a0knowledge.\u00a0The\u00a0programme\u00a0enabled a lot of cross-learning.\u00a0I\u00a0had\u00a0consciously decided to pursue a\u00a0general MBA instead of a healthcare-focused\u00a0MBA\u00a0because I\u00a0wanted to get perspectives from lateral industries\u00a0and\u00a0see if something could be\u00a0adapted\u00a0and applied\u00a0to healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n
When the second wave of Covid-19 hit India, unprecedented challenges faced the\u00a0healthcare\u00a0industry. With no\u00a0protocols\u00a0laid out to tackle\u00a0such a situation,\u00a0learnings\u00a0from\u00a0organisational\u00a0behaviour\u00a0and\u00a0leadership\u00a0lessons\u00a0at ISB\u00a0came in handy for Mahesh. He explains,\u00a0\u201cWe\u00a0scaled from\u00a050\u00a0new\u00a0patients\u00a0under\u00a0home\u00a0care\u00a0in March to over\u00a0500 new patients\u00a0per day\u00a0in April\u00a0\u2013 a growth of\u00a010x\u00a0times.\u00a0Healthcare is a very human business, and learnings from the\u00a0PGPMAX\u00a0courses helped me navigate\u00a0through\u00a0some of the toughest challenges that leaders can face in dealing with people.\u00a0The\u00a0most important being the art of\u00a0being agile\u00a0and\u00a0understanding\u00a0the\u00a0human psychology\u00a0of\u00a0how\u00a0to\u00a0incentivise\u00a0people in the right manner, at the right time, for the right cause, and\u00a0highlighting\u00a0their\u00a0impact.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the occasion of\u00a0Doctor\u2019s Day, he says, \u201cTo people, I would say, do not wait for a pandemic to express your gratitude to the doctors who take up this profession despite the\u00a0adversities, long studies,\u00a0hard work,\u00a0and lesser pay during the initial few years. To doctors, I want to say, never let your patients down because they place their trust in you.\u00a0If that remains the guiding force, the entire mistrust gap between patients and doctors will come down because there will be a\u00a0common\u00a0goal of upholding the trust on both\u00a0the\u00a0sides.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
