It [also] gave them happiness<\/em><\/a><em>\u201d \u2014 but at what cost?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ruralindiaonline.org\/en\/library\/resource\/national-family-health-survey-nfhs-5-2019-21-meghalaya\/\">National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-5 (2019-21) factsheet of Meghalaya<\/a> stated that undernutrition in young girls (aged 15 to 19 years) in rural areas, and among scheduled castes is a common phenomenon. Although the NFHS-5 for Meghalaya represents only 11 districts, collected from 10,148 households: 13,089 of which are women aged 15-49 (including 1,965 women interviewed in PSUs in the state module) and 1,824 men aged 15-54, between 8 July 2019 to 15 November 2019, it is additionally a fact supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/megsocialwelfare.gov.in\/reports\/case-study%20Sept%202021.pdf\">Social Welfare Department<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/megsocialwelfare.gov.in\/reports\/case-study%20Sept%202021.pdf\">2021 Meghalaya Case Study.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Physical Complexities and Risks of Teenage Pregnancies<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1111\/j.1753-4887.1981.tb06734.x\">Tanner<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/parenting\/stages-of-puberty#tanner-stages\">Stages,<\/a> the female body reaches puberty and begins development around age 8 and fully develops at the age of 15. However, it is yet another fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/meghealth.gov.in\/docs\/Meghalaya%20Health%20Policy%202021.pdf\">teenage pregnancies<\/a> are more likely to face <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s12098-007-0171-2\">physical complications during pregnancy<\/a> attributing to <a href=\"https:\/\/statecapability.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MPOWER_Center-for-Adolescents-.pdf\">17%<\/a> of maternal deaths, with anaemia being prevalent in 52.5%, and higher frequencies of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), pre-eclamptic toxaemia (PET), eclampsia and premature onset of labour (POL). Furthermore, premature birth of babies leads to more complications, such as \u201chigher risks of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/adolescent-pregnancy#%3A~%3Atext%3DAdolescent%20mothers%20(aged%2010%E2%80%9319%2Cbirth%20and%20severe%20neonatal%20condition\">low birth weight<\/a>, pre-term birth and severe neonatal condition\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"461\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.isb.edu\/bhartiinstitute\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/4\/2024\/10\/Dataset.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.isb.edu\/bhartiinstitute\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/4\/2024\/10\/Dataset.jpg 461w, https:\/\/blogs.isb.edu\/bhartiinstitute\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/4\/2024\/10\/Dataset-300x103.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 461px) 100vw, 461px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/ruralindiaonline.org\/en\/library\/resource\/national-family-health-survey-nfhs-5-2019-21-meghalaya\/\">NFHS-5 Meghalaya Dataset<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>What is Teenage Pregnancy?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the female body is considered developed at 15 years of age, this stage is quite a sensitive period of growth, both mentally and emotionally. The frailty of this age is what renders it under the ambit of the definition of a \u2018child\u2019, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Documents\/ProfessionalInterest\/crc.pdf\">Convention on the Rights of the Child<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Documents\/ProfessionalInterest\/crc.pdf\">(<\/a>CRC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences <a href=\"https:\/\/wcd.nic.in\/sites\/default\/files\/POCSO%20Act%2C%202012.pdf\">(POCSO) Act<\/a>, 2021 under Section<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2(d). As such, any pregnancy between the ages of 13 to 19 years of age is termed as \u2018teenage pregnancy\u2019, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7924244\/\">UNICEF<\/a>. However, since pregnancy is entirely dependent on menarche, which begins between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK470216\/#%3A~%3Atext%3DMenarche%20is%20defined%20as%20the%2Cof%20onset%20being%2012.4%20years\">ages of 10 and 16<\/a>, this type of pregnancy is also referred to as \u2018adolescent pregnancy\u2019 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/iris.who.int\/bitstream\/10665\/42903\/1\/9241591455_eng.pdf\">WHO<\/a>; because the term \u2018adolescent\u2019 is adjacent to \u2018teenager\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Teenage Pregnancies in Meghalaya<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Meghalaya, the \u201cliberal lifestyle\u201d, noted <a href=\"https:\/\/themeghalayan.com\/unveiling-the-struggles-of-single-mothers-in-matrilineal-meghalaya\/\">Dr. Glenn C. Kharkongor<\/a>, Chancellor of Martin Luther Christian University, Shillong, accounts for teenage pregnancies as \u201cthe norm\u201d. But, with increasing awareness and with the implementation of the POCSO Act, it was deemed a problem and there are now <a href=\"https:\/\/indiankanoon.org\/doc\/131452230\/\">consequences to these pregnancies<\/a>. It is presumed that the rural areas lack awareness and quality education, which grants leeway for rampant teenage pregnancies. Curiously, the urban space, with presumed better access to awareness and quality education notably exhibits higher fertility rates per the <a href=\"https:\/\/ruralindiaonline.org\/en\/library\/resource\/national-family-health-survey-nfhs-5-2019-21-meghalaya\/\">NFHS-5 data<\/a> depicted below.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"382\" height=\"241\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.isb.edu\/bhartiinstitute\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/4\/2024\/10\/Dataset2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1104\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.isb.edu\/bhartiinstitute\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/4\/2024\/10\/Dataset2.jpg 382w, https:\/\/blogs.isb.edu\/bhartiinstitute\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/4\/2024\/10\/Dataset2-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/ruralindiaonline.org\/en\/library\/resource\/national-family-health-survey-nfhs-5-2019-21-meghalaya\/\">NFHS-5 Meghalaya Dataset<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The NFHS-5 denotes 7.2% of all women between the ages of 15-19 years in <a href=\"https:\/\/theshillongtimes.com\/2023\/10\/21\/teenage-pregnancy-can-a-child-raise-a-child\/\">Meghalaya<\/a> being pregnant during the survey period of 2019-2020, which accounted for 8.4% of rural area and 3.2% of urban area teenage pregnancies in the State, with the average teenage pregnancy rate in the country standing at 6.8%. Although the percentage is higher in rural areas, the level of education per the graph depicting total fertility rate (children per women) indicate that even education does little to deter teenage pregnancies. With a sample size consisting of 600 male teenagers and 600 female teenagers, the researchers of the <a href=\"https:\/\/meghalayamonitor.com\/putting-the-lens-on-teenage-pregnancy-crisis\/\">2021 Martin Luthur Christian<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/meghalayamonitor.com\/putting-the-lens-on-teenage-pregnancy-crisis\/\">University (MLCU) study<\/a> \u2018A Report on Teenage Pregnancy with a Special Focus on Familial, Legal and Socio-cultural Context in Meghalaya\u2019 while on the Health and Family Welfare Department Meghalaya podcast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qokzo_IvHpQ\">Adolescents Unfiltered,<\/a> observed that teenagers became sexually active as early as 13 years of age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As per \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c3india.org\/uploads\/news\/FINAL_POLICY_BRIEF_2019-compressed.pdf\">Adolescent Girls in the North East: Realising Rights and Navigating Challenges 2019<\/a>\u201d, girls dropping out of secondary school in the Northeast specifically, Meghalaya is at 20%. When the rest of the country\u2019s dropout rate has reduced significantly, the north-eastern states exhibit an increasing number of girls dropping out of school. In most cases, girls who are pregnant, regardless of their circumstances, get excluded from school.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"523\" height=\"311\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.isb.edu\/bhartiinstitute\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/4\/2024\/10\/Dataset3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1105\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.isb.edu\/bhartiinstitute\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/4\/2024\/10\/Dataset3.png 523w, https:\/\/blogs.isb.edu\/bhartiinstitute\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/4\/2024\/10\/Dataset3-300x178.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(The graph above highlights how flagrant a problem <a href=\"https:\/\/meghalayadataportal.com\/visualise?dataset_id=58c6af6c-03e2-4c7c-9a33-b2f996c5a6d2&amp;vis_id=VIS_0RV8qLyf\">teenage pregnancy is in Meghalaya<\/a>.)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Fleeting Happiness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the research article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/medical.advancedresearchpublications.com\/index.php\/IndianJ-YouthandAdolescentHeatlh\/article\/view\/1141\/897\">Motherhood Sans Adulthood: Future at Stake<\/a>\u201d, their sample size of 14 (17 \u2013 26-year-old) females, reveals a positive experience with early motherhood with 14.3% feeling \u2018happy\/lucky\u2019. The researchers speculate that this \u2018happiness\u2019 stems from a \u201clack of awareness of the consequences\u201d. The <a href=\"https:\/\/meghalayamonitor.com\/putting-the-lens-on-teenage-pregnancy-crisis\/\">2021 Martin Luthur Christian University (MLCU)<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/meghalayamonitor.com\/putting-the-lens-on-teenage-pregnancy-crisis\/\">study<\/a> (as referenced in episode 8 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qokzo_IvHpQ\">Adolescents Unfiltered<\/a> podcast) cites \u2018love\u2019 being the leading reason for engaging in sexual intimacy in teenagers below 19 years of age.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"392\" height=\"290\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.isb.edu\/bhartiinstitute\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/4\/2024\/10\/Dataset4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1106\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.isb.edu\/bhartiinstitute\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/4\/2024\/10\/Dataset4.jpg 392w, https:\/\/blogs.isb.edu\/bhartiinstitute\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/4\/2024\/10\/Dataset4-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qokzo_IvHpQ\">Adolescents Unfiltered<\/a> podcast<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>While the cause may seem derisory, a deeper delve uncovers the bleakness of broken families devoid of love, ensuing in its pursuance from romantic relationships. The lack in their socio- economic background is yet another driving force for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qokzo_IvHpQ\">starting families<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/medical.advancedresearchpublications.com\/index.php\/IndianJ-YouthandAdolescentHeatlh\/article\/view\/1141\/897\">prematurely.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the euphoria wears off and reality creeps in, a lifetime commitment in the form of an infant deters many young mothers from pursuing their dreams, be it <a href=\"https:\/\/medical.advancedresearchpublications.com\/index.php\/IndianJ-YouthandAdolescentHeatlh\/article\/view\/1141\/897\">education or career<\/a>, with<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the vicious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qokzo_IvHpQ\">cycle of poverty<\/a> disrupting the latter. The article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/themeghalayan.com\/unveiling-the-struggles-of-single-mothers-in-matrilineal-meghalaya\/\">Unveiling the struggles of Single<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/themeghalayan.com\/unveiling-the-struggles-of-single-mothers-in-matrilineal-meghalaya\/\">Mothers in Matrilineal Meghalaya<\/a>\u201d sheds light on a potential grim future for teenage mothers \u2013 barely making ends meet while solely bearing the burden of the entire family, in addition to her newly formed family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Steps to Abate Teenage Pregnancy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With proper understanding of the gravity of the situation, steps can be taken to mitigate the underlying problem of teenage pregnancies in the State. The <a href=\"https:\/\/meghealth.gov.in\/docs\/Meghalaya%20Health%20Policy%202021.pdf\">Meghalaya Health Policy, 2021<\/a> aptly details what changes are necessary to comprehensively address this issue \u2013 sincere<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>endeavour to break social stigmas and taboos related to use of birth control and discussion of teenage pregnancies, respectively, and awareness and capacity building apropos to the phenomenon.
